THERE'S STILL TOMORROW/C'È ANCORA DOMANI (Paola Cortellesi 2023)

Already reviewed,; now seen with the series audience one could see how striking its images are, how funny it is, and what a crowd pleaser it is. Note: this indictment of patriarchy in Italy is one of the ten biggest box office movies in the country's history - it outstripped BARBIE there. No info on U.S. release. It has been distributed in France and the UK.

EL PARAÍSO (Enrico Maria Artale 2023)

Bonds that destroy are effectively depicted in Artale's oedipal drama of a in illegal Colombian woman and her dependent 40-year-old living in a drug dealing and using bubble on the fringes of Rome/Fiumicino and speaking in their own mixture of Roman dialect and Spanish. Vivid, intense mix of realism and expressionism and powerful performances by Margarita Rosa de Francisco and Edoardo Pesce.

Screened for this review as part of the Open Roads: New Italian Cinema series (May 31-Jun. 6, 2024) at Lincoln Center. Showtimes were:
Saturday, June 1 at 1:00pm – Q&A with Enrico Maria Artale
    Tuesday, June 4 at 6:00pm
