Launched in 2002, the festival showcases a wildly diverse lineup of singular titles each year, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. Notable festival guests have included Lee Byung-hun, Ryoo Seung-wan, Masami Nagasawa, Sammo Hung, Lee Jung-jae, and Jackie Chan. Since 2010, NYAFF has been produced in collaboration with Film at Lincoln Center.

BUSHIDO (Kazuya Shiraishi 2023) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?5490-New-York-Asian-Film-Festival-2024-(July-12-22-FLC)-REVIEWS&p=41936#post41936)

Aside from occasional silliness and a bit too much Go-playing, this foray by Shiraishi into the world of Jidaigeki period samurai drama is stately and beautiful.

Bushido 碁盤斬り ("Gobangiri,""Go Board Cutting") , 129 mins., debuted May 1, 2024 at the Far East Festival in Udine, Italy. Screened as part of the NYAFF, showing Tuesday Jul 23, 8:15pm (Beatrice Theatre, SVA Theatre)

Actor-turned-filmmaker Ming's novel-based sophomore picture about a young woman with life-threatening kidney failure and her journey with two friends is full of troubling realism, chaos, and energy. Perhaps a bit too much, but an exciting new talent whose complex, rich way of filling the screen made made me think of early Jia Zhang-ke.

Carefree Days 逍遥游 (Xiao yao you, "Carefree Journey"), 122 min., debuted Sept. 22, 2023 at San Sebastián. Screened for this review as part of the 2024 NYAFF.

As a queer romance this is just one long tease, but what a swoony non-couple the two leads make, and what a sweet, poetic load of silliness the frame story is! This is the international premiere.

Portrait of a dating app romance shows the elusiveness of such unions: the man never has a hold on the beautiful young woman he's found or knows who she is. The director fails to stick the ending but must be forgiven because it is the last film he made before he died at 46 of lymphoma.

This debut from Taiwan about a 12-year-old girl with ADHD and the struggling, sometimes irresponsible adults around her is "prickly" and "paradoxical" as the enthusiastic festival blurb states, but fails to jell into a meaningful statement about neurodivergence or family disfunction as promised. An unusual Golden Horse best actor award for Audrey Lin, who plays the girl, however.

Set primarily in the eighties when the Kowloon Walled City existed , a gritty, cluttered enclave rife with crime, where an undocumented man with exceptional fighting skills arrives seeking a home and an identity.
