William Hurt dead at 71 in his home in Portland, Oregon.

He died of the complications of prostate cancer, diagnosed in 2017. Hurt won the Oscar for : Hector Babenco's 1985 Kiss of the Spider Woman, a tour-de-force performance in which he portrayed a gay man sharing a Brazilian prison cell with a revolutionary. Hurt's famous roles include Altered States, (1980), The BIg CHill (1983), Children of a Lesser God (1986), Broadcast News (1987, Lost in Space (1998), and History of Violence (2005).

The four-time Oscar-nominated actor was one of the most acclaimed stars and bankable leading men of the 1980s. Hurt earned Oscar nominations in three consecutive years — for his role as a prisoner in a Brazilian jail in 1986's Kiss of the Spider Womoan, 1986's drama Children of a Lesser God (alongside "CODA" star Marlee Matlin - with whom he was romantically involved for a year - a relationship that was disfunctions, according to Matlin's memoir report) and as a TV anchor in 1988's Broadcast News He also got an Oscar nom for History of Violence.

One went to a movie with Hurt expecting a fine performance, and was rarely disappointed.
