It starts later this year due to the pandemic; the 2020 series was delayed till Dec. This is the 50th anniversary of ND/NF, so there is a retrospective series of selections from early years, including Christopher Nolan's debut, Gregg Araki's, and films by Charles Burnett, Lee Chang-dong, and Chantal Ackerman. The main series is presented "via virtual cinema, with in-person screenings extending through May 13 at FLC" (Lincoln Center; the films are normally shown both at Lincoln Center and MoMA).

The New Directors/New Films selection committee is made up of members from both presenting organizations. The 2021 feature committee comprises Florence Almozini (Co-Chair, FLC), La Frances Hui (Co-Chair, MoMA), Rajendra Roy (MoMA), Josh Siegel (MoMA), Dan Sullivan (FLC), and Tyler Wilson (FLC), and the shorts were programmed by Brittany Shaw (MoMA) and Madeline Whittle (FLC).

The films are shown at the Walter Reade Theater but with very limited seating from April 28 to May 13, 2021, and online in virtual form to May 8, 2021.

Preview of ND/NF film from Brazil, Madiano Marcheti's 'Madalena':

In this hauntingly oblique yet vivid moral drama, set in a rural Brazilian town, three characters’ lives are affected in different ways by the death of Madalena, a local trans woman whose body is found in one of the vast soybean fields that stretch across the region. For cisgender Luziane (Natália Mazarim) and Cristiano (Rafael de Bona), a bar hostess and a wealthy soy farm scion, respectively, her death occasions vastly different kinds of rupture, while for Bianca (Pâmella Yule), a trans woman and friend of the deceased, it is a more tragically matter-of-fact instance of increasing violence perpetrated on their community. Director Madiano Marcheti’s almost sidelong approach—with Madalena providing the film’s structuring absence—is a provocative challenge to conventional narrative and a rebuke to formulaic depictions of trauma.

Growing up in a divided family during the Iranian revolution, which made me miss PERSEPOLIS with its lively self-interrogation. The filmmaker reconstructs her parents relationship, his liberalism, her militant Islamist takeover, through reconstructed photographs, invented scenes and staged dialogues, not realistically. The effect is stylish, but one is left with more questions than answers.

Somewhat surprisingly but gratifyingly, in a private review Mike D'Angelo rates this a for him enthusiastic 71/100 (May 26, 2021) and hopes it gets US distribution. That would be nice.

It starts out on the wrong foot for me - with the hurricane, which lasts four minutes. Too much, too soon, and yet not enough, and what follows seems simplistic and as naïve as its characters. Lacks stylistic flair.

A bit loose, but a great picture of the vibrant largest city in Africa.

ANKE BAK IN HONG KONG IN WOOD AND WATER

German director Jonas Bak's first feature, which got its debut at ND/NF, will be released theatrically in New York at MoMA March 24, 2022 with Los Angeles and national releases to follow, I have recently learned. My original review is linked to above.

Shown at many festivals, starting with ND/NF, at the Berlinale it won the Compass-Perspektive Award - Special Mention and was nominated for Best First Feature; numerous nominations and a few wins at other fests.

Rewatching it now a year later, the framing and some of the images struck me as quite beautiful and distinctive, and a few of the encounters - with the fortune teller and his retired artist schoolmate and the apartment house receptionist - remained vivid memories, but a lot of it had faded away. Despite the meditative slow-film beauty of the whole, this is not a deeply memorable film, perhaps because it doesn't carry much emotion. But the meditative quality impresses, as well as the consistently distinctive eye, and there are moments that strongly evoke the strangeness of solitary travel like hardly any other film I've ever seen.

All fans of minimalist slow films should be interested. Beatrice Loayza, in her NYTimes comment (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/28/movies/new-directors-new-films.html), noted that it's a film "which pairs wonderfully with Chantal Akerman’s The Meetings of Anna," which was in the retrospective section of last year's New Directors/New Films series, where this film had its debut.

MoMA/Film at Lincoln Center series New Directors/New Films (Apr. 28-May 8, 2021). It will be presented at the Berlinale in June. h will be released theatrically in New York at MoMA on March 24, 2022, Los Angeles on Fry, Apr 15 at the Lumiere Music Hall.with a national release to follow.

Despite her Senegalese parents, documentary filmmaker Alice Diop identifies as French. Filming the varieties of population along the RER B line that goes through and beyond Paris, she questions the idea of multicultural union, but is hopeful, saying, "'We' is what happens when 'I' opens up" and finding commonality with an older white French writer.
