It starts later this year due to the pandemic; the 2020 series was delayed till Dec. This is the 50th anniversary of ND/NF, so there is a retrospective series of selections from early years, including Christopher Nolan's debut, Gregg Araki's, and films by Charles Burnett, Lee Chang-dong, and Chantal Ackerman. The main series is presented "via virtual cinema, with in-person screenings extending through May 13 at FLC" (Lincoln Center; the films are normally shown both at Lincoln Center and MoMA).

ND/NF 2021: Descriptions of the films

Aleph ( Iva Radivojevic) Structured as a labyrinth-like game and inspired by Jorge Luis Borges, Aleph is a travelogue of experience, a dreamer's journey through the lives, experiences, stories and musings of protagonists spanning ten countries and five continents. All of them are destined to wandering and error; all climb, fall and are beset by doubt, all are adrift and lost in the night."-Director's description.

Faya Dayi dir. Jessica Beshir. . A spiritual journey into the highlands of Harar, immersed in the rituals of khat, a leaf Sufi Muslims chewed for centuries for religious meditations - .

Friends and Strangers dir. James Vaughan. "Director, screenwriter and editor James Vaughan richly spices his exploration of the culture of affluent young adults with millennial irony. Who killed the trans woman Madalena, how and why is never revealed in the Brazilian film Madalena. In his assured debut, director Madiano Marcheti doesn't even reveal how the corpse was discovered. Yet the image of this motionless body lends an extra charge to everything that follows." - IFFR.

Being the sole child of divorced parents, she is the only one who can look after Paris, who requires daily care. What transpires is a leisurely (sometimes too leisurely) journey as the four girls head to a train station at the end of the line. But upon arriving and taking a few pictures, none of the girls is satisfied." - Berlinale review by Brian Corser.

Stop-Zemlia dir. Kateryna Gornostai. Introverted high-school girl Masha sees herself as an outsider unless she hangs around with Yana and Senia who share her non-conformist status. Set in Buenos Aires in 1980 in the middle of the "Dirty War," this depicts a Swiss banker coming from Geneva to replace his partner who has suddenly disappeared, and it is a slow burner that seethes with quiet, luxurious menace and a mix of immorality and danger that has been compared to Joseph Conrad and John Le Carré.

NATÁLIA MAZARIM IN MADALENA

Preview of ND/NF film from Brazil, Madiano Marcheti's 'Madalena':

From Film at Lincoln Center:
In this hauntingly oblique yet vivid moral drama, set in a rural Brazilian town, three characters’ lives are affected in different ways by the death of Madalena, a local trans woman whose body is found in one of the vast soybean fields that stretch across the region. For cisgender Luziane (Natália Mazarim) and Cristiano (Rafael de Bona), a bar hostess and a wealthy soy farm scion, respectively, her death occasions vastly different kinds of rupture, while for Bianca (Pâmella Yule), a trans woman and friend of the deceased, it is a more tragically matter-of-fact instance of increasing violence perpetrated on their community. Director Madiano Marcheti’s almost sidelong approach—with Madalena providing the film’s structuring absence—is a provocative challenge to conventional narrative and a rebuke to formulaic depictions of trauma.

Playing on May 1 at 9pm and May 9 at 12:30pm at Film at Lincoln Center.

Growing up in a divided family during the Iranian revolution, which made me miss PERSEPOLIS with its lively self-interrogation. The filmmaker reconstructs her parents relationship, his liberalism, her militant Islamist takeover, through reconstructed photographs, invented scenes and staged dialogues, not realistically. The effect is stylish, but one is left with more questions than answers.

Film from the Dominican Republic about a legendary faith healer believed to have been transformed in a hurricane. It starts out on the wrong foot for me - with the hurricane, which lasts four minutes. Too much, too soon, and yet not enough, and what follows seems simplistic and as naïve as its characters. Lacks stylistic flair.

This suavely creepy picture of a corruptible Swiss banker coming with his wife to serve the junta during Argentina's "dirty war" time in 1980 gets US release Fri., Sept. 10, 2021. See my original review above. Metascore now 87%.

ANKE BAK IN HONG KONG IN WOOD AND WATER

German director Jonas Bak's first feature, which got its debut at ND/NF, will be released theatrically in New York at MoMA March 24, 2022 with Los Angeles and national releases to follow, I have recently learned. My original review is linked to above.

Shown at many festivals, starting with ND/NF, at the Berlinale it won the Compass-Perspektive Award - Special Mention and was nominated for Best First Feature; numerous nominations and a few wins at other fests.

Rewatching it now a year later, the framing and some of the images struck me as quite beautiful and distinctive, and a few of the encounters - with the fortune teller and his retired artist schoolmate and the apartment house receptionist - remained vivid memories, but a lot of it had faded away. Despite the meditative slow-film beauty of the whole, this is not a deeply memorable film, perhaps because it doesn't carry much emotion. But the meditative quality impresses, as well as the consistently distinctive eye, and there are moments that strongly evoke the strangeness of solitary travel like hardly any other film I've ever seen.

All fans of minimalist slow films should be interested. Beatrice Loayza, in her NYTimes comment (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/28/movies/new-directors-new-films.html), noted that it's a film "which pairs wonderfully with Chantal Akerman’s The Meetings of Anna," which was in the retrospective section of last year's New Directors/New Films series, where this film had its debut.

MoMA/Film at Lincoln Center series New Directors/New Films (Apr. 28-May 8, 2021). It will be presented at the Berlinale in June. h will be released theatrically in New York at MoMA on March 24, 2022, Los Angeles on Fry, Apr 15 at the Lumiere Music Hall.with a national release to follow.

French documentary opening theatrically in the US starting with June 22, 2022 at MoMA in New York. PREMIERES STREAMING EXCLUSIVELY ON MUBI, JUNE 29:

NOUS (US) (Alice Diop 2021) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4966-NEW-DIRECTORS-NEW-FILMS-2020-(April-28-May-8-2021)&p=39573#post39573)

Despite her Senegalese parents, documentary filmmaker Alice Diop identifies as French. Filming the varieties of population along the RER B line that goes through and beyond Paris, she questions the idea of multicultural union, but is hopeful, saying, "'We' is what happens when 'I' opens up" and finding commonality with an older white French writer.
