Based on an international bestseller set in 1936, this noirish detective story about a curious news reporter seems a bit generic at first, but Budapest is a great place to make a movie these days, and this one is all aces in the period department, with images saturated with browns, maroons, golds, pale sunlight and gleaming black Thirties sedans that slither and gleam. The lead lady is glamorous, the lead male hardboiled, and fond of a good bourbon.

WAJIB (Annemarie Jacir 2017) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4477-San-Francisco-International-Film-Festival-2018&p=36714#post36714)
Follows a Palestinian father and son in Jerusalem when the son returns from Paris for a wedding ceremony. Around the periphery we sense the tensions and unhappiness Palestinians feel in this confined environment of diminished hopes and expectations, while the son feels the confinement of a rigid culture he's no longer a part of. I will publish full review when this comes to theaters on the 5th of August.
Playing in the SFJFF at these times and venues:
8:55 p.m. Tues. 24 Jul. at Castro Theatre, San Francisco
8:20 p.m. Fri. 3 Aug. at San Rafael

BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES (Sophie Huber 2018)
Two Jewish guys fled from Nazi Berlin, and started the best jazz label of all time. This documentary is a feast of jazz music and we get to see the great Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock record with a new Blue Note band - because the label lives on today. A rich, beautiful film, one of the best jazz docs in a while.
Playing in the SFJFF at two times and venues:
3:35 p.m. Sat. 21 Jul. at Castro Theatre, San Francisco
4:05 p.m. Sun. 5 Aug at Piedmont Theatre, Oakland[/B]

There are many classic Blue Note albums on YouTube now. You can hear all of Thelonius Monk's recordings with the label here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0DQjFgKNWI&list=PLZSQ2Y1ptQJdqeV5IxZIJsUxzAFg4H0V6).
Here is a recording that's not Blue Note, but a superb date, with great sound, from Monk in Japan in 1966. Nine minutes of sheer perfection. MONK IN TOKYO (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxdnQOs0BNo). (CBS Redords 1973 release.)
Personnel
Thelonious Monk – piano
Charlie Rouse - tenor saxophone
Butch Warren – bass
Frankie Dunlop drums
What a team!
If you cue in "Monk in Tokyo," you can get other cuts from the album on YOuTube.
See here Wikipedia Monk in Tokyo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk_in_Tokyo).
The film notes, the other labels would not record Monk.

THE MOSSAD (Duki Dror 2018) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4520-San-Francisco-Jewish-Film-Festival-2018&p=37051#post37051)
Not one of the bold, shocking Israeli docs, except for members of their spy organization talking at all. The paradox: the Secret War is better than all-out conventional war, but these guys never consider treaties. It's not in their playbook. Interviews with most of the important directors and some operatives of the Israeli MI6 or CIA.
Showing on Tues., 24 July at CitiArts, Palo Alto; Thurs. 26 July at the Castro, San Francisco, at 1:15 p.m.; and Fri., 27 July at Albany Twin, Albany at 3:50 p.m.

THE PRINCE AND THE DYBBUK (Elwira Niewiera, Piotr Rosolowski 2017) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4520-San-Francisco-Jewish-Film-Festival-2018&p=37052#post37052)
A poetic and dreamy film about a rather strange man. Jewish, homosexual, expelled from yeshiva after being a star pupil, son of a blacksmith, he ran away to Warsaw, changed his name, and became a famous filmmaker. He called himself a prince, and in Rome, later Spain, produced grand Hollywood spectaculars, hung out with James Mason, Sophia Loren, Orson Welles. His lost love haunted him like a dybbuk, and though hiding his origins, he kept diaries in Yiddish. The filmmakers, who won a prize at Venice, track their subject in Italy, Spain, Eastern Europe and Israel - yet arguably omit some important facts.
At the SFJFF showtimes are: on Sun., 22 July at 2:05 p.m. at the Castro, San Francisco, and on Sat. 4 Aug. at 2:00 p.m. at the Piedmont Theater in Oakland.

THE TWINNING REACTIOIN (Lori Shinseki 2017) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4520-San-Francisco-Jewish-Film-Festival-2018&p=37059#post37059)
Here again is that "Nazi shit," as one of the triplets calls it: the cruel and pointless Viola Bernard-Peter Neubeuer twin study of the Sixties and Seventies in which identical siblings were separated unknown to them or their adoptive parents for a study that never bore fruit and has been sealed - the topic of Three Identical Siblings. This documentary is only 55 minutes and was stared several years earlier. It covers similar ground, the two films are "twins" themselves. But this smaller one may be more incisive.
Shown in the SFJFF 3:25p.m. on Tues. 24 Jul. 2018 at CineArts, Palo Alto
and at 2:15 p.m. on Fri., 3 Aug., at Piedmont Theater, Oakland.

BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES (2018) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4520-San-Francisco-Jewish-Film-Festival-2018&p=37041#post37041)
Note that Sophie Huber's BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES (2018) gets its theatrical release today. The revisit of the two Jewish immigrants who formed the most famous label in jazz is a must-see for music fans. It provides a review of essential jazz history. A NY Times "Critic's Pick, (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/13/movies/blue-note-records-beyond-the-notes-review.html)" it got an enthusiastic review from Glenn Kenny. Watch for it.
