Mill Valley: Some notes. Reviews of these and more films in the festival will come soon in the Filmleaf Festival Coverage section (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4222-MILL-VALLEY-FILM-FESTIVAL-Oct-6-16-2016&p=34940#post34940).

Three documentaries:
Do Not Resist (Craig Atkinson). The government is systematically militarizing local police departments throughout America. And if you have equipment, you use it.
Death by Design (Sue Williams). You love those little electronic devices you hold in your hands so much. So convenient, so elegant, so compact. But they're just the tip of a vast iceberg of human and environmental damage.

Company Town (Deborah Kaufman, Alan Snitow). San Francisco, city of hills and light, is filling with skyscrapers full of Silicon Valley techies. But a new councilman of a key district wants to restore local autonomy.
Two Italian films:

Confessions, The/Le confessioni (Roberto Andò). The cunning Toni Servillo (Il Divo) is back again in a drama about global economists and a white-robed monk.

Assolo/Solo (Laura Morante). A beautiful Roman woman enters her fifties full of doubts and seeks help from lovers, ex-husbands, sons, and friends, but a mistreated little dog may be her best friend.
Four portraits:

Aquarius (Kleber Mendoça Filho). A regal, stubborn woman (the great Sônia Braga) fights developers in the Brazilian seaside town of Recife, refusing to leave the little Forties "Aquarius" apartment building they want to tear down.

Christine (Antonio Campos). Rebecca Hall, in a great performance, is Christine Chubbuck, the 1970's Sarasota TV newswoman who blew her brains out on live TV. (Surprisingly, there is much to sympathize with and be amused by here in Campos' more mainstream effort, one of the most interesting and original movies of the year.)

Egon Shiele (Dieter Berner). The true story of the unique Viennese artist who was a key influence of early twentieth century art and style. A handsome, intimate portrait.

Land Legs/Tempête (Samuel Collardey). Dominique Leborne, playing himself in Collardey's engaging neorealist drama, is a French deep sea fisherman who has to rethink his life of lose his teenage children. http://www.chrisknipp.com/links/schgkli.jpg

DO NOT RESIST (Craig Atkinson 2016) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4222-MILL-VALLEY-FILM-FESTIVAL-Oct-6-16-2016&p=35018#post35018)

An explosive exposé of militarization of local US police departments supplied with surplus from the country's many wars. Police are indoctrinated with a culture of violence and repression from Ferguson to every small town in America and get the heavy equipment for overkill. Opened at Film Forum NYC 30 Sept 2016, at Mill Valley and nationally mid-October.

DEATH BY DESIGN (Sue Williams 2016) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4222-MILL-VALLEY-FILM-FESTIVAL-Oct-6-16-2016&p=35021#post35021)

With local footage and expert talking heads Williams lays out the devastating human and environmental damage done by tech gadgets' manufacture - and outsourcing the supply chain to China doesn't help us. Metal is metal: it all flats back. A few pioneers are leading a way back. In the Mill Valley festival 7 & 11 Oct. The filmmakers are seeking viewers to host local screenings and organize grassroots involvement; learn how you can slow down the process at http://deathbydesignfilm.com/solutions/

COMPANY TOWN (Deborah Kaufman, Alan Snitow 2016) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4222-MILL-VALLEY-FILM-FESTIVAL-Oct-6-16-2016&p=35034#post35034)

Kaufman and Snitow's documentary describes the pushback by longtime San Franciscans against the encorachments of Silicon Valley. Former SF City Council chairman wins a battle to represent the crucial Third District of the city promising to represent people against so-called "shared economy" plutocrats who falsely present Uber, Airbnb, Lyft etc. as populist enterprises while they really displace the middle class and benefit the 1% uber-rich.

Company Town has its world premiere at the Mill Valley 9 & 15 Oct. 2016.

KEEPER (Guillaume Senez 2015) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4222-MILL-VALLEY-FILM-FESTIVAL-Oct-6-16-2016&p=35039#post35039)

A little drama about unplanned teen pregnancy by young Belgian filmmaker Senez. The actors are 15, like their characters. The boy is played by Swiss-French actor Kacey Mottet Klein, who has been interesting ever since Ursula Meier discovered him when he was eight and build her next movie, Sister/L'enfant d'en haut around him. The theme is familiar here but the treatment is delicate and low-keyed and the film has scored four festival wins and three nominations.

Showing in the Mill Valley festival 11 and 12 Oct. 2016.

CONFESSIONS/LE CONFESSIONI (Roberto Andò 2016) (http://www.filmleaf.net/showthread.php?4222-MILL-VALLEY-FILM-FESTIVAL-Oct-6-16-2016&p=35095#post35095)

Starring Toni Servilo as a monk in white robe invited to an IMF conference. This is an indictment of rich countries for their indifference to the poor, etc., along with a superficial whodonit. The film has a tendency to lecture us, and the always-watchable Servillo has less to do this time than in Andò's previous film Long Life Freedom. This has Connie Nielsen, Marie-Josée Croze, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Lambert Wilson, and Daniel Auteuil in a key role.

The Confessions showed at Mill Valley 14 & 15 Oct. 2016.
