Criterion announces September releases, including Kieślowski's Dekalog.

We are excited to announce Criterion's incredible September line-up. First up, one of the company's most ambitious and long-awaited releases, a complete and newly-restored edition of Krzysztof Kieślowski's epic 10-part masterpiece, Dekalog, a kaleidoscopic exploration of morality and humanity, available on Blu-Ray and DVD. The films will also have a theatrical release. Next we visit Valley of the Dolls, Mark Robson's steamy, eye-popping adaptation of the decade-defining pop culture novel, as well as its deliriously entertaining, ante-upping semi-sequel, Russ Meyer and Roger Ebert's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, an outrageous and raucous cult classic, each in their own glorious new DVD and Blu-ray editions. Just as visually stunning is the restoration of one of the great debuts of American cinema, Joel & Ethan Coen's Blood Simple, a mad, murderous, and wildly influential Neonoir fresh off its theatrical re-release. The long awaited release of Jacques Tourneur's Cat People, made under the guidance of legendary producer Val Lewton, is a landmark of the horror genre and one of the cinema's best creature features. Kenji Mizoguchi's pre-war masterpiece of love and theater, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums, joins the Collection in a US debut on Blu-Ray and DVD. All this plus Carol Reed's WWII Spy Thriller, Night Train to Munich, from the writers of Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes, now available on Blu-Ray for the first time, plus the twenty-five-film set of the adventures of Zatoichi, The Blind Swordsman, now available in a Blu-Ray-only edition.

New Criterion releases are always to be celebrated.
Dr. Strangelove was a Criterion laserdisk way back in the day...is the *missing* pie-fight sequence in there? Probably not.

In other Kubrick news, Barry Lyndon is being re-released to the big screen this year. Any and all film buffs should Run.

Barry Lyndon indeed is a good one to see in a restoration on the big screen, with the unique photographic methods created to shoot by candlelight and all the subtle images. Restorations are coming hot and fast these days.

I missed screenings of this at Criterion and can't make one now (being out of New York) but this is something many of us have not seen. I grew up in Baltimore and my mother knew John Waters' mother but I've never actually met him. My mother and I used to go to see his more mainstream films at the Senator Theater, where they premiered, near where I grew up.

John Waters's gloriously grotesque and extremely hard to see second feature [1970] comes to theaters at long last, replete with all manner of depravity, from robbery to murder to one of cinema's most memorably blasphemous moments. Long out of print, the restoration will open at the IFC Center in NY on August 5 (with Waters present), with a nationwide release to follow.

Made on a shoestring budget in Baltimore, with Waters taking on nearly every technical task, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the "Cavalcade of Perversion,"a traveling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, who's out for blood after discovering her lover's affair.

Starring Waters's beloved regular cast the Dreamlanders, (including Divine, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Edith Massey and Cookie Mueller), Multiple Maniacs is an anarchist masterwork from an artist who has doggedly tested the limits of taste for decades.

As mentioned earlier, a restoration of the Coen brothers debut Blood Simple is on the way. A theatrical rerelease of the thriller will open at Film Forum in New York and at the Alamo New Mission Theater in San Francisco Fri. 1 July, in L.A. 29 July at the Landmark Nuart, with roolout coming in other cities.

My next purchase will be CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT by Orson Welles. This is a personal favorite. Is it my favorite film based on a work or works by on William Shakespeare? No, that would be OTHELLO, by Welles also. One question I have is whether everything they release under the Criterion label nowadays is on BluRay. They look so much better than the dvds when shown on a theater screen or the large drop-down screens available in the rooms where I teach.

In answer to your question, all the new Criterion discs are issued in both formats. Do you know there are disc rot problems with earlier Criterion Blu-ray discs? There has been an exchange program. Ever cautious about embracing new formats, I have not yet gotten any Blu-rays.
