A peek at the Venice Film Festival (http://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema) of 2011, which runs from August 31 to September 10. The international films in competition are listed below. There are Italian films, not surprisingly. Unlike the NYFF, Asia is highlighted, with five films included. I would have liked to get a first look at Philippe Garrel's hot summer, Todd Solodz's new one, and Sokurov's Faust. And there are others that sound good, such as Alfredson's new distillation of John Le Carré and Andrea Arnold's very contemporary rethinking of Emily Brontë. Giorgos Lanthimos won big fans among cinephiles with his Dogtooth. Satrapi-Paronnaud is the team that produced Persepolis, the animated Iranian political memoir. Selections that are also coming to Lincoln Center shortly are Abel Ferrara's, Cronenberg's, McQueen's and Polanski's. New York gets Clooney, but but not in the political film he has directed, rather in Alexander Payne's The Descendants. (P.s.: I'm not going to be in Venice. Just reading about it.)
