If you wonder the value of a film's score or its emotional impact on an audience, simply turn down the sound to the opening of "Out of Africa" and try to imagine what it would be like without that powerful sweeping magnificent orchestration that carries us from a simple writers room to the memory of her experience in Africa. The score in that opening sequence is responsible for our reaction. Such is majesty and the power of John Barry's work.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I sat at my desk and wrote to the sound of a John Barry score. He literally made hundreds of compositions and contributions to many films. I have my personal favorites, which are too many to mention. I could list them all, but the five-time Oscar winner has such a long list of credits that I would be typing it up all day…

Here are some of my favorites:

Dances with Wolves (AA)
Out of Africa (AA)
Born Free (2 – AA)
Body Heat
Thunderball
Goldfinger
Somewhere in Time
The Deep
Midnight Cowboy
A Lion in Winter (AA)
The Cotton Club
The Ipcress File
From Russia With Love
Chaplin
King Kong
