FILM COMMENT CRITICS POLL

I'm very much on the same page with these. They come from largely the same folks that bring us the New York Film Festival and other Lincoln Center events. Film Comment is the publication of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. And that's where I now have a large portion of my best cinematic experiences thanks to Peter's talking me into attending the NYFF in 2005..

The best-of-US-releases list is a great list, and it's mostly films I saw at Lincoln Center, especially the NYFF. (Unfortunately it includes a fair proportion of stuff you couldn't see away from major urban centers, sometimes anywhere other than NYC or LA.) I do not share the great enthusiasm for the Romanian filmmakers, particularly not with POLICE, ADJECTIVE, though it's certainly original. I'm not so crazy about HEADLESS WOMAN, either. Maybe I'm wrong; it's certainly in the tradition of European art films and I can see the talent of Lucretia Martel. I wasn't thrilled by CORALINE; in fact I found it rather repulsive. Maybe I was wrong on that too; again, it is distinctive. I didn't realize there would be so much enthusiasm for TULPAN, but there's a lot of life in it and it evokes a unique place, the steppes.

Otherwise these choices in the first list are just great. I wish they had mentioned GOODBYE, SOLO. This time INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS was not excluded, even though it was not showcased at Lincoln Center. At least ten of these are on my year's best list.

BEST UNRELEASED FILMS OF 2009

This is a list largely drawn from the NYFF of this fall, with a few other films added.

Maybe three I don't agree on; some others I haven't seen. I didn't really like MIN YE--it seemed to me tedious and self-indulgent and overlong. Richard Pena seemed to love it. I found TO DIE LIKE A MAN lurid and clumsy, not well made. I found the Chinese documentary GHOST TOWN way too long and tedious in its focus on a drunk; however I can see that Zhao Dayong is young and promising and has links with Jia Zhang-ke. The following were not in the NYFF: I did not see LIKE YOU KNOW IT; I wondered why this Hong Sang-soo wasn't in the NYFF; he's a NYFF favorite; it was at Cannes. I don't know anything about IN COMPARISON or CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH or GUY AND MADELINE ON A PARK BENCH; the latter sounds intriguing.

The rest are just great, and include wonderful titles and wonderful classic directors, far above the average even if not always their makers' best work. I especially admire A PROPHET and LIFE DURING WARTIME, which stand out to me as unquestionably among the year's best.

Both are great lists, and make the usual US theatrical fare go pale and wither.

*The unreleased list is almost like a ranking of what critics liked most at the NYFF and I am not surprised that a film directed by Alain Resnais is at the top. Then again, I have not seen it, or any of the other films listed.

*I spent the last month of spring and the first month of summer watching and thinking about films around which I could build a Thesis. Which films would be more likely to yield insights into themselves and the medium? Which films would be worthy of spending the rest of the year analyzing? Which films would continue to reveal new facets after multiple viewings? Which films have yet to be properly appraised by the available scholarship? Ultimately only Jia and Lucrecia Martel fit the bill. Martel's more complex and varied "mise-en-scene" and revolutionary use of sound won over Jia's blend of the fictional and the documentary by a small margin. The #2 ranking od The Headless Woman is the first evidence I have that enough American critics are finally understanding her filmmaking.

Film Comment has finally released the results of their poll. There are a number of essays and commentaries available only in the magazine's January/February issue. Also the best of 2009 list has been released with details of how many points each film received. It is comforting to this writer how close second -place The Headless Woman, which was barely released, came to beating The Hurt Locker, which played in thousands of theaters. Now the best of the decade list has been released. I cannot think of a better prescription-for-viewing for the serious cinephile than this ranked list of 100 titles.

I see all of these are on Netflix except Star Spanged to Death , RR (James Benning) and West of the Tracks, LA Plays Itself, and Turning Gate are in the "SAVE" category, meaning when they get the DVD it'll be available. But I've had LA Plays Itself in "SAVE" for months and months. I find I watched La Captive n 2007 but didn't remember it. The others I have put in my queue to watch via Netflix.

Otherwise it seems like a pretty good list. I like a lot of them. Which ones did they add on for 2009?

That makes this not a very good year, since each year should have ten. Maybe it's just too soon, and too many earlier films seem great, so no room was left?

Here's the breakdown in no. of titles per year:

I think that comes out one over, I don't know why. My guess is that these disparities in number chosen from year to year is due not necessarily to a tapering off of quality as to how the process of decade-list-making works. Or it might mean nothing. But a list makes one want to dissect it. Maybe I'll think of more intelligent comments as time goes on.

We can look at which directors are most generously represented. Four by Jia Zhang-ke. The whole art trilogy by Gus Van Sant, Gerry, Elephant, and Last Days. I have thought very highly of these, but have not gotten a lot of support. Jerry was particularly not appreciated. Van Sant made six films in the decade. I would might also include Paranoid Park. Both of P.T. Anderson's features of the decade, Punch Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood, are included. Three titles from Clint Eastwood--of the eight he directed in the decade. Both of Bong Joon-ho's, both of Todd Hanyes'. Aki Kaurismäki: one of the two he made; I like the other just as well, Lights in the Dusk. Hong Sang-soo made eight; two made the cut. Assayas made six; two got chosen. Claire Denis has three titles listed here (one I haven't seen, but the other two are outstanding, The intruder, 35 Shots of Rum). From looking at this information you can get an idea who seem to the Film Comment people to be the important filmmakers of the decade, though it's not just a matter of numbers, of course.

Some directors may be felt to have declined, such as André Téchiné. He made five features but none was chosen. He may indeed have had a better decade in the Nineties, when he made I Don't Kiss, My Favorite Season, Wild Reeds, Les Voleurs, and Alice et Martin. But Strayed and The Witnesses (2003, 2007) were both very good; I don't see much of a falling off there.

Was there a falling off for Scorsese, from the Nineties (Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence, Casino, Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead)? Or has it all been downhill since the Seventies and Eighties, or doesn't it even matter, since he's done so many important films?

I don't think you'll be shocked by the omission of these directors who are among my favorites. Their films have had insufficient exposure and/or have been under-appreciated but that's only one guy's opinion. I express it only at your request, not because I want to impose my value judgments on anyone.

*The two films from the Film Comment list I have not seen are the 2 avant garde/experimental ones: 64 and 66.
*The things I find quite noteworthy is the high regard critics have for Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2 in Top 10 and another listed), Lucrecia Martel (her whole filmography, consisting of the Salta Trilogy, is listed) and Pedro Costa (whose two fiction features of the decade were barely shown and won't be available on DVD until Criterion puts them out in March).

I'm missing 64 and 66 too, but also those other ones. Your number-chosen-per-year comparison doesn't seem to relate to the Fim Comment, one; in these international, highly eclectic lists, there don't seem to be any good or bad years really.

I think too they ought to make more of an effort to include directors that are either new, or came to international attention in the decade, hence I'd agree with you on Panahi, Bahrani, and Alonso. I'm not suffering too much from the omission of de Oliveira and Ghobadi (have only seen two by each though). Certain fimmakers are darlings of the critics and these include Weerasethakul, Martel it appears, and Costa. Nothing surprising in their inclusion, but a just proportion meanst they ought to have tried to include more directors like the oes you mention. With the New York writers included in the Film Comment poll, they can hardly claim not to have been able to see those directors' work.
