Alejandro Amenabar's The Others is quite great.
It's a suspense film with really fine performances and masterful cinematography.
The story is all about ghosts and mysterious goings-on in the home of Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman).
Her husband has gone off to war, and she lords over her two children Anne and Nicholas, who have a condition of photo-sensitivity. Most light sources have to be banished. She's strict with them, forcing them to study the Bible, punishing them whenever she sees fit. She's not necessarily a bad mother, but her behavior becomes more and more frantic as bizarre things start happening where the viewer is left wondering what the hell is going on.
The actors who play the children are a revelation (Alakina Mann & James Bently). Man are they good. Especially Alakina. She's a great little actress. Loved her performance.
Clues as to what's happening are there, but it all doesn't become clear until the end, and I don't think too many people can predict the ending. It through me through a loop.
The ending is an "A-Ha!" type thing.
An "A-Ha! So that's what this was all about!" type thing.
It's a psychological/paranormal drama.
Well made film- just about perfect performances from everyone involved. To the letter a fine film.
