42nd Golden Horse Awards 2005

It is the award that recognizes most Chinese films, be they from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.

(1) Election (by Johnnie To) leads with 11 nomination!!!
(2) KungFu Hustle (by Stephen Chow) follows with 10 nominations
(3) Three Times (by Hou Hsiao Hsien) follows with 9 nominations

... but you can never tell who will ultimately win ...

As for "The Promise" and "Perhaps Love", they have not been submitted this year due to screening time, they will fall under next year's award.

My review for Election will be on the board tomorrow ... hee hee ...

I am not sure if I can succeed, but I will try to find out if this version has received any finer tuning after premiering at Cannes Film Festival this year

Unlike previous years, most winners are agreed upon in the first round of voting ...

-- Lead Actress: Shu Qi (6) to Michelle Krusiec (5)
Reason: The jury thought she had successfully departed from her frequent Hou Hsiao Hsien's style, they esp like the scene where she played the flute/pipe, and fully demonstrated the deep felt internalized sadness of the woman ...

-- Lead Actor: Aaron Kwok (10) to Tony Leung (1)
Reason: The jury thought he had successfully departed from his singing and dancing image, they esp like the scene where he wept, and there were blood streams/capillaries in his eyes and he fully demonstrated his immense sadness ...

-- Supporting Actor: Anthony Wong (11, unanimous)
Reason: The jury like the chemistry between him and his onscreen son (Jay) ... one already did not feel that he was acting ...

-- Supporting Actress: Yuen Qiu (8) to Lu Yi-Ching (2) to Hsiao Shu-Shen (1)
Reason: The jury thought she was superb ...

-- Best Director: Stephen Chow (8) to Tsai Ming-liang (3)
Reason: The jury indicated that "people in the business/professionals" would be able to recognize Stephen's passion/diligence/effort; Also, overseas jury members Hayashi Kaizo (Japanese director) and Kwak Jae-young (Korean director) who were already impressed with Stephen's earlier work Shaolin Soccer were impressed with the leap in production standard ...

Reason: There is always the contention of whether Best Film and Best Director should go hand in hand ... The jury felt that there was far more novelty/creativity by Stephen (in KungFu Hustle) than Hou Hsiao Hsien (in Three Times) ... This was complemented by the excellent directing ... hence, the win.
