Is the Big Lebowski the funniest film of all time?
It certainly is up there, although I don't claim to be an expert on run of the mill comedies, Lebowski is hilarious. Coen brothers are Gods.

I vote it the funniest movie of all time, at least by the criteria of having the most hilarious memorable lines. It even beats out "Fletch" and "Caddyshack", and that says something.
"Yeah, I got a rash, man".

The dude is my hero. Homer Simpson used to be, but the duderino, (or his dudeness) is king.
Some of those lines.... fall out of your seat funny.
I think you're all gunna reckon I'm a killjoy - but I don't think "Big Lebowski" was even a particularly good Coen Bros film - by their high standards that is.
Raising Arizona is easily their funniest and one of the funniest films ever made. Lines like
"I'll be takin' these huggies and all the cash you got"
"Why are all your men in the one house in the whole of Arizona where we know my boy ain't at?"
"Not unless you think rounds funny"
I would have thought "The Party" and "Take the Money and Run" were some of the funniest ever made - but that's probably just me.

Well, I'm not sure I would place "Lebowski" at the top of my Coen Brothers favorites list, because it's so different from their other movies. It's really a different type of movie than "Raising Arizona"; it's lighter with less intended meaning, I believe. "Raising Arizona" is about middle-class Americana trying to achieve happiness in their "salad years". "Lebowski", on the other hand, isn't really intended to be much more than a really funny story about a stoner and the wacky people he encounters. My suggestion is to just take it at that, nothing more. Just sit back and laugh.

Not the most, I hate the music numbers, they are neverending!!
If you cut them it is a really really funny movie, but being serious there are many movies that are more or at least as funny as this.
All the screwball comedies for example.
But in any case this is my favorite Coen brothers film, and one of
few films that I love in this bad epoch for the cinema.

"I Am The Walrus! I Am The Walrus, dude!"
"(Sigh...) Vladimir Ilyich, Donnie..."
Whenever I want to be cheered up, this is the one I reach for in the video pile. Hysterically funny from beginning to end - every line a cherishable quote.

"We know which Lebowski you are, Lebowski..."
Very rarely when watching movies do you get a genuine shock of recognition, a sense that these are your people up there on the screen... I got it from "Withnail & I", and I got it from "The Big Lebowski", in spades. Love it like the imaginary friend I never had: watch it at the drop of a hat. Dude!
"Awww, not the fucking Eagles, man..."

By the far the funniest coen bros. Raising arizona, although classic, is a tad outdated these days. Fargo, brilliantly dark and alot of japes to boot. But Lebowski wins hands down.
"Where's your car dude"......."Your phones ringing dude"
"They're gonna kill that poooor woman"
"I had buddies die face down in the dirt just so we could enjoy this family restaurant"
"Eight year olds dude"

"Uhhh... nice marmot..."
"Yeah... I got a rash, man..."
I'll take the Dude over Raising Arizona any day, tho' I've nothing whatsoever against the latter. It's a belly-laugh thing, simple as that. And for whoever said The Big Lebowski wasn't really a Coen Brothers movie:
"Obviously you're not a golfer."

Who the hell said that. Blasphemy. Don't mind a bit of Barton Fink action either.
"I'm throwin' in the ringer dude"
"and pull the trigger till the gun goes click"
"Yeah, well, thats just like your opinion man"

Do you have a JOB, sir?
Depends on what you mean by employed

"Suck your cock for a thousand dollars... he can't watch, though. He has to pay another hundred."
"My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal, Jeffrey."
"That rug really tied the room together."
"And these are Mr Lebowski's children!"
"Different mothers, huh?... so, he's prettty, uh, cool, like, racially...?"

Hee, hee... have you noticed that fans of this magnificent movie seem quite happy just to quote lines back and forth at each other? This is what happens when EVERY SINGLE LINE from the film is a quotable gem...
"Brother shamus? What, like an Irish monk?"
"Your revolution is over, Mr Lebowski! Condolences! The bums lost!"
"Lotta strands to keep in the ol' duder's head..."
"Three thousand years of beautiful history from Moses to Sandy Koufax? Damn fuckin' RIGHT I'm livin' in the fuckin' past!"
"Well, you can guess what happens next."
"He fixes their cable?"
"Shomer shabbas, dude."
"This is not 'Nam, Smokey. This is bowling. There are rules."
"Just one thing, Dude. Do you have to use so many cuss-words?"
"... What the fuck you talkin' about, man?"

People do quote from this flick quite a bit. I find more quote "Lebowski" than Pulp Fiction...MORE!:
"You think the carpet pissers did this?"
"You are being very UN-Dude"
"You were over the line, Smoky"

True, Johann - so I guess that means the Coens write snappier dialogue than Nerdy Tarantino! But then I think we always knew that, didn't we?
"Jackie Treehorn... treats objects like women, man!"
"Ve gonna cut off your Chonson, Lebowski!"
"And squeesh it!"
"Oh yeah! Wow, my thinking on this case has been really uptight!"
"Nothing is fucked here, man!"
"Nothing is fucked? Nothing is fucked? Mr Lebowski, the plane has crashed into the side of the mountain!"
"Nihilists? Fuuuck... I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos..."
"This... will not stand, man!"

I love it - line after classic line from "Lebowski". Got to go watch it again.
Also, what I love about the movie, besides the great lines, is the look of the characters and the scenes. Like when Jeffrey ("no one calls me Lebowski. I'm The Dude!") is doing some sort of yoga move in his living room, with a cigarette (or is that a joint?) in his mouth, a beverage in his hand, and a poster on the wall of Richard Nixon bowling. Classic.
The movie is an educational experience as well. Before seeing this movie, I had never heard the terms brother shamus, shomer shabbas, or ethos (did I get that right?)

"papers, business papers", "i'm unemployed"
"well looks like we can close the case on that one"
"listen maude, er, i'm sorry if your step mother is a nympho but I don't see what this has to do with, uh, do have any kahlua?"
"You don't like sex?"....."You mean coitus"
'Man if my fucking ex-wife asked me to take care of her fucking dog while she and her boyfriend went to honolulu i'd tell her to go fuck herself"
sorry, can't help myself.

"It's like Lenin said - You look for the person who will benefit, and ... uhm ...You know what I'm saying?"
"I mean, she owes money all over town, including to known pornographers, ... and that's cool, that's cool, man".
