Golden age director Robert Wise (1914-2005) has gone to that big theatre in the sky.

He made The Day The Earth Stood Still, Run Silent, Run Deep, West Side Story, The Sound of Music and Star Trek: The Motion Picture: all films that made a mark on the medium one way or another.

Although he hadn't made a film of note since Star Trek, he will be eternally remembered for his 2 major musical classics of the 60's.

As far as I'm concerned, Wise will always be the studio boy who mutilated The Magnificent Ambersons at RKO's request when Orson wasn't looking.
Not an artist but a hack well-financed and supported by the studios.

Well if he hadn't done it, somebody else would have.

There have been some good Wise films, The Haunting among those not mentioned, and I was a fan of the Body Snatcher.

Can't call him much of an artist, for there really isn't a Robert Wise style, but he was a compitent director, and hell the man who edited Citizen Kane deserves a special place just for that.
