The movie relates the crush of a 14-year-old with his beautiful aunt after the death of her husband …
What is good …
-- The film charts on rather bold topic …
e.g., a teenager’s fantasy about his aunt
e.g., a teenager’s voyeuristic expeditions with an adult
-- It also has a good mix of comedy and pathos, realism and fantasy … yet, the entire film comes across as credible …
-- Finally, when one wonders how the film will end, the director delivers the ending well, with a nice message from the father to the son …
What could be better …
-- Given that the entire film is narrated from the perspective of a 14-year-old, he has to be more compelling. Unfortunately, he does not grip the audience …
-- Since the entire film is narrated from a single person's perspective (or journal entries), there is the danger or possibility of featuring certain episodes that he may not be involved (so, how could he know so much in details) … Yet, the film seems to narrate a rather complete story (albeit nonlinearly) …
-- As the narration is nonlinear, audience may find it confusing initially. However, by the end of the film, the story falls into place …
Conclusion:
I often wonder how much is lost in translation, esp. the humor/sadness in language and in context (i.e., only understood locally).
An above average film …
;)
