"I have this reputation, and I don't like to disappoint my friend, but I'm far less of a perfectionist than Antonio the painter. I made this film in eight weeks and perhaps there is an autobiographical aspect in that we both experience life in a similar way and with similar obsessions. If you think about it, these are the greatest themes of Spanish Baroque art: the passing of time, dreams, decadence, and also the theme of childhood. These are themes that belong there. Also, we both have roots in the countryside - we are both from the countryside, the painter and myself." -

One of the best films of the 90's, El sol del membrillo (The Quince Tree Sun) is finally being released on dvd. Directed by the legendary Victor Erice, this entrancing parable on art and the artist was shown at Cannes in 1993 winning the Grand Jury prize along with the Critics Prize. Facets released the film stateside theatrically as Dream of Light in 2000 followed by it's vhs release in 2001. Actually going by Erice's history his next film should be due soon as he made El Espíritu de la colmena in '73 and then El Sur a decade later.
The dvd of El sol del membrillo is being released in Spain and according to a friend has many subtitling options including English. The only place it's availble for now is FNAC. The site 'Masters of Cinema' also reported this info.
